SUBJECT:  Louisiana Legislation SB 555

Senator DuPre has introduced Senate Bill 555, which amends Louisiana law to create   stricter requirements for the medical exemption.

Currently, the law only requires an affidavit signed by a “physician or optometrist.”  In its       new form, the law would require an affidavit from an “optometrist, ophthalmologist or dermatologist.”  In addition, the medical exemption must be the result of a diagnosed condition that is verifiable in the American Medical Association Journal.

Each exemption will be subject to review every three years, and current exemptions will   expire one year after the amendment takes effect.

The amendment also requires the purchaser of a vehicle with film previously covered by           a medical exemption to remove the film.
