Legislative Alert
TO:
Manufacturers, Distributors, and New York Dealers
FROM: Ben Ford,
Legislative Committee
DATE:
June 4, 2004
SUBJECT: New York AB 723
AB 723, a bill that was
introduced in January of 2003 has resurfaced in
the New York Assembly. It passed the Transportation Committee and
was referred to the Codes Committee. IWFA legislative consultants
are currently working diligently with members of the New
York Assembly to amend similar
legislation that was introduced this year. If their work with
the legislature is successful, the result would be viable,
enforceable
l legislation that protects the industry and its consumers and
addresses the concerns of law
enforcement officials.
AB 723 would restrict
window film light transmittance on all windows to
70%, with one exemption for the rear window if rear-facing mirrors
are mounted on the side of the vehicle.
This change in the laws would make
all new sport-utility vehicles arriving from the factory for sale in
New York illegal.
Every effort must be made
to prevent this legislation from passing. The
success of this bill would severely limit the industry in New York
and
would negate much of the work that has been done there this
year. Taking the time to telephone, email or write your
Assemblyman will greatly increase
the chance for IWFA to support effective and thoughtful legislation
in New York in the coming months,
which will have lasting positive effects for your business.
Please write, phone
and/or e-mail Assemblymen Mirones and Cusick to encourage their continued work with IWFA
to create
effective legislation for New York.
