Guide To Avoiding Glass Failure
History of Glass Breakage
Often a building has a history of unexplained glass breakage.
The
unexplained glass breakage could be caused by a wide variety of different factors.
If the
amount of unexplained glass breakage exceeds 1% of the total amount of glass exposed,
caution should be exercised. Window film should not be applied until the causes of the
breakage can be logically identified and explained. Many of the causes of glass breakage
can stem from conditions that are unique to the building and will continue or be enhanced
with the addition of film. Such items as surface and edge damage and shade patterns or
interior shade devices may be the contributors to unexplained breakage and thus it is
important to closely investigate each situation. Past building records should be sought to
verify if any clues can be uncovered to ascertain the probable causes of the unexplained
glass breakage.
